This chapter served up one quick little reminder that I'm going to hate doing the TL for Volume 13 which has the infamous 5 part pro-whaling story... But hey, I promised to do it...

As far as this chapter goes, I know curry is very common here in the United States, but coming from a small southwestern Pennsylvania coal town, I did not actually try any curry for the first time until I was in my 20s. It simply isn't available where I grew up and one would've had to go to one of the few Indian restaurants in Pittsburgh in order to get it. I don't think I know of a place in the city that serves Japanese style curry. In any case, I've never had their variation of it.

Tochigawa being disliked by Gentaro makes sense, once you break a person's trust hard to get it back.

Kariya-sensei's views aren't normally so regressive—except for his pro-whaling stance. I get that it's historical and cultural, but lol.

Anyway, throughout this entire chapter I was expecting them to make goat curry. Beef marrow curry still uses beef, doesn't it? But goat curry is totally a normal thing...

I know goat curry is common in Indian curry, but is it common in Japanese curry as well?

As far as his views on whaling goes, I’ve been over my feelings on it in other chapters, and no doubt it’s going to come up again, but a big part of why I have such a big problem with Kariya’s views on this issue is because they’re just blatantly dishonest. This volume came out in 1987. The global population still hadn’t recovered from being hunted. The blue whale had nearly been hunted to extinction. Kariya doesn’t seem to have believed that. Also, while commercial whaling has been banned here, we do permit small scale aboriginal subsistence whaling. Now, today, I could probably forgive small scale whaling if it were done at a subsistence level in Japan (considering that very few Japanese seem to want to eat it at this point), but Kariya (and the Japanese government) wants the resumption of commercial whaling without any controls, and that is something I think should be opposed in the strongest possible way.
