Great stuff, non korean or japanese wouldnt try to look for this info outta nowhere and would just come across this colonial policy probably just from this chapter (probably even the younger japanese too). Super ballsy for the mangaka to include this even if this could be just a throwaway writing but seeing how there were more of similar type of stories told in previous chapters I believe this is sincere.

I've read Kariya's blog. When it comes to national and international politics, Kariya is very sincere, very outspoken, and very incendiary. It comes through in his manga as well. Any time the characters start going off about these political topics, you can clearly see where Kariya stands on the issue, and he's very often critical of the Japanese government.

It's why there's a vocal minority of Japanese readers who consider Kariya a traitor to the country, despite his clear love of Japanese food, art, and culture.

Massive respect to Kariya and his team for publishing this chapter, and thank you so much for translating it thoughtfully! It speaks straightforwardly to an aspect of history that the contemporary readers may not have known about, within the constraints/pressure of publication and editorial at the time.. Kariya's sincerity and heart really show in the work, and it's a shame to hear that he's been lambasted because of it! It would be like denouncing Tezuka for the different realities shown in his work..
