This might be the best chapter of the series so far. Kurita is finally taking an active role, stepping into the lion's den to support her friends instead of just standing around worrying like she normally does. And Kaibara's explanation of the tea is clearly a parallel to Kurita and Yamaoka's relationship. Tea is refined and welcoming, symbolizing Kurita. Kombu is salty yet the backbone of Japanese cuisine, symbolizing Yamaoka. They are both glutamates, as he explains, but they symbolize how the two people are the gourmets that work together to bring out the best in each other. Kurita cuts down Yamaoka's "brininess" exactly like the tea. Now we see Yamaoka rushing off to join her, where I'm sure they'll work together to create a drink combining the two of them. I haven't read ahead but this is, again, actually good writing.

That tea analysis is fantastic! I don't think Kariya is poetic enough to have intended it, but it works so well.

And yes, I do enjoy this chapter's developments. For too long, Kurita has been largely a passive observer, so any time she takes the reins is exciting and gripping.

It's honestly really annoying, like in the last chapter she correctly identified every single ingredient yet no other characters pointed it out. The author reminds the viewer that Kurita's sense of taste is as refined as Yamaoka's yet in her own world this is hardly ever acknowledged. Frustrating work.

I keep laughing at the author not being skilled enough for this kind of writing. That's fair.

Yeah. As much as I enjoy Oishinbo, I will admit that the author is not very subtle with his writing. Whenever he makes an intended analogy, you can bet the characters are going to beat you over the head with their explanations.

I made it sound bad but well, I do find a goofy charm in it. It makes the series a good outlet for more theatrical translations.
