I'd like to believe that Okinawa's longer history of pork consumption than the Japanese mainland is because Japan only included Okinawa in its sphere of influence after the Sengoku era (17th century), meaning Japan's centuries-long Tenmu edict that prohibited meat consumption and related activities (tanning hides, etc) didn't leave that much of a trace and legacy in Okinawa.
