This chapter. It's pretty infamous. This is when Mrs. Arakawa and Mrs. Mitani cemented themselves as antagonists to Yamaoka directly, but also indirectly to Kurita and her cause. We'll have to make our peace with it however soon we can, because I've read far ahead in the series and I can tell you. This change won't revert.

At least Yamaoka's answer to the test was really nice.

Yeah, it's really disappointing, and I have a suspicion as to why Kariya wrote them this way. (It's not a very charitable suspicion so I'll spoiler it out of courtesy, and length.)

Spoiler: The Ladies became villains because...?

I think Kariya wrote himself into a corner. You might have noticed, but the ladies' respective husbands aren't appearing as much in the series anymore. Their stories and conflicts have been told and resolved, and now there's nothing for Kariya to write about unless he uses them to introduce other, new people (like how he used Mitani in this chapter).

The husbands got the easy way out. They don't work in Tozai News, which means they don't have to appear at all. But Mrs. Mitani and Mrs. Arakawa do. He can't just not include them, but he also hasn't developed them enough to give them any sort of food associations (compare to Tomii, whose food association is that he sucks at tasting things, but that makes him an easy source of food-based conflict). The easy (lazy) solution then, is to just make them antagonists. That way, whenever they appear, there's an easy joke to fall back on that'll work just fine in an episodic format. It's the same technique he used on Ohara, and on Koizumi.

I don't know anyone who likes this development. I certainly don't like it.

Interestingly, there's one more recurring character who's been dead-ended like this. A character we haven't explored very much of: Director Tanimura, whose characterization is basically just 'he will do the good thing every time'. His case is much more forgivable, if only because Tozai is filled with petty, uptight assholes, so his demeanor always comes as a breath of fresh air.

with this, I've finally caught up to the Gourmet Times scanlations! Thank you for all your hard work on this project, and all your educational translation notes. I've had a wonderful time reading these gluttonously, and I'm looking forward to keeping up with new chapters going forward!

I'm surprised that the whole romantic angle of this series took such a dramatic and foregrounded turn. I knew that they'd eventually end up together, from the Wikipedia article or something, and I figured it might just be something that kinda happens all of a sudden, like Senbei getting married in Dr. Slump lol. Never would have guessed that it would be such an explicit plot point. I agree that it isn't the strongest writing the series has had by a long shot, everyone really is acting like they're 14 years old, but I did love the secret "third answer" to their test: he didn't get mad, he didn't remain content, but he just had so much fun foraging that he didn't care lol.

I really was holding out hope that they would get rerailed somewhere down the line. I truly was. But to know that this is it for them for the rest of the series? I'm absolutely livid. Seriously, screw you Kariya for doing this to your characters.

I literally said this in another chapter's comment myself, but yeah: HANAMURA-MITANI there is the worst of the bunch. Not only did Yamaoka find her now-husband for her at all, he also saved her life. And then spoiler from the future, HER KID WAS KIDNAPPED and Yamaoka helped to make the kidnapper confess to where her kid is, and she STILL won't acknowledge Yamaoka has some good side to him.

Tabata-Arakawa at least gave Yamaoka a gift as thanks for helping her with the old mother in law once. Mrs Mitani did jack all ever.
