I do enjoy chapters like these where we explore a rarely-seen food item. It's always nice to learn something new.

Coincidentally I was just reading about sea pineapple a few days ago. I realized that it was actually one of a few mysterious gunkan nigiri I'd tried last time I was in Japan. I was... not a huge fan lol. But maybe I could come to appreciate it.

I'm someone who has special interests in food, and in animal taxonomy lol. Ascidians are pretty interesting as they're one of the more remote branches of life that we eat (besides like, plants and fungi ofc lol). It's cool that it also has a very remote taste from even other seafood.

The sea pineapple slices in the salad ends up looking a bit like mango. It really is bright orange, wow.

Interesting to think about it in terms of the branching web of life.

I haven't eaten sea pineapples myself. I think the furthest animal branches I've eaten are the echinoderms (sea urchins and sea cucumbers) and cnidarians (jellyfish).

always nice to see how processing done for these exotic food. I think theres one jap channel that does these fish processing, doing all kind of sea creatures big or gigantic. Kinda forgot what channel since I usually found the guy from scrolling through youtube rec
