Here's hoping that he will take good care of his younger sister. He might be the president now, but can he protect her from the tabloids and the people from her past?

Maybe It's mix of me admittedly not being the most wellresearched on adoption and custody stuff in Japanese culture (Ontop of having lived a entirely different experience)

But like....Firstly, is the separation of siblings still a thing, and secondly, was it a real thing cus I have seen it in Sota's Knife (Good read) as well. Like...I dunno, separating siblings cus of divorce or being orphaned seems...needlessly cruel a system. Adopt them both feels like the on principle thing to do, or atleast have them live closeby (at minimum same town). Maybe its idealistic.

As for myself, my parents never legally divorced, but they separated (on friendly terms), and me and my brothers would spend two weeks there, two weeks there. I couldnt imagine going through this version of events, I feel I'd be inconsolable.

It certainly was a thing. Child adoption is rare in Japan for reasons that would take me too long to go into, but yeah, it happens. Here in the U.S., it was very common in the past. At the turn of the 20th century, they even had trains that would take orphaned children from cities like New York to the Midwest and west where they would be shown off like livestock and families could simply take them without much trouble. Years later, some of those people, who were elderly by then, would attempt to find their siblings such as on the television show Unsolved Mysteries, which frequently ran “Lost Loved One” stories.

I mean, to be fair not every prospective adopter feel ready (mostly financially) to adopt two kids at the same time. Like even if they want to adopt a kid, they usually plan for only one at a time.

I think part of it is also that it was more common to have larger families in the past. so the number of siblings that would need to be “adopted together” could be 5 or 8. it would seem like common sense to split that group up rather than wait for a household that wanted 8 kids at once. it’s a system that prioritizes “getting the kids into a home” over keeping them with siblings in an institutional setting (plus institutions like orphanages also often separated by age and gender so…)
adoptive families aren’t always acting totally selflessly. sometimes they just want A Kid (more often, A Baby)

also like Bippidi touched on, the idea that children have rights and can’t
be given out like little indentured servants to households that need someone extra to milk the cows in the morning is sort of a modern invention. so there’s that as well

Ya'll make great points, I did come at it a bit idealistic and not read up-on.
