As someone who likes tomato in literally every form BUT as just a tomato to bite into (I like em sundried, as sauce, roasted or stewed til mush) I gotta say

Ultimate was robbed. Like, the rules change in these. Sometimes you win cus you took the extra steps, sometimes you dont. Ultimate has been robbed more than once cus the judges just sort of judge by vibes of whatever they think at the time. Theyve lost or tied for the same seasons theyve (rarely) won.

Like if we view this as a COOKING battle (It often seems like these duels cant decide if they are COOKING or CULTURE battles) , then I'd say Supreme did the bare mimimum. Literally just came with tomatoes. I'd even call it downright lazy from Yuzan's side. Theres no effort.

The Ultimate salad looks a little bit like the Vietnamese Nộm or Gỏi, in the sense of having a nuoc mam based dressing with little lime or vinegar added and absolutely no oil. The difference is that the Vietnamese ones have the dressing poured over the salad instead of soaking the vegetables for a while like how Yamaoka did it here.

For the Supreme salad, utterly bs. No cooking efforts, just go hoard all the best tomatoes and call it a bloody day. This level of shilling is something one cannot simply describe without a bloody essay on why the Supreme Menu is just the equivalent of Vargentina of 2026 World Cup, without the losing aspect, that is.

I probably would’ve liked a tomato salad much more than the Ultimate’s menu but yeah, not right out of the dirt without being cleaned.

A salad goal's is not to force people to eat vegetables. It's to combine different types, elevating the flavour while maintaining the components greatness. Kaibara failed.
Imagine that tomatoes accompanied by the crunch of lettuce, the saltyness of the seaweed and the aroma of toasted sesame seed, not to mention herbiness from mints. Finally a light vinegarette to awaken your taste buds.

I feel like Kaibara should be disqualified because that's not a salad and he's just wrong completely.

I would have taken that dumbass result if this had happened: Yamaoka stands up and argues "A single tomato isn't a salad because of the ancient origins defines salad as (blah blah blah)!!". Then Kaibara can counter with "Ah, but our Japanese understanding of salad is different from its roots, we adopt food from foreign culture and make it our own. (insert some bullshit explanation about what the Japanese cultural understanding of salad is here)".

Going by how stubborn the author can be, I feel his argument would simply be " Nuh uh. "

Also going back to tomatoes, I wouldve even been fine with the result if it waa that like.....when they did spaghetti, Kaibara wins because whilst his dish is simple and basic, the tomato sauce and oil is not superfluous/overpoweringbut a flavor booster to the noodles, whereas Yamaoka chose toppings that ultimately IS all you tasted of the pasta, even if theyre individually delicious. Ultimately, perfectly fine and fair win.

Here, Kaibara shouldve just lost. Its barely cooking, AND its a lazy effort. Ontop of it, its appealing to sentimentality " Dont you remember the good ol daaays of picking tomatoes with your paaaaw " when he has before given Yamaoka shit for appealing to sentimentality when Yamaoka won. Why cant he just be a villain, why does the story insist hes some misunderstood saaaaage. Hes just noooot.

I went out of my way to find a Japanese source on Archive.org that had this chapter to spoil it for myself, and I'm still disappointed. What an absolute garbage result this was. Frankly, the only thing that makes it even slightly tolerable is that it was a tie rather than a complete loss, but I'm putting "tolerable" in air quotes visible from space. Also, real talk, having the thing that convinces Kurita to perform what only doesn't qualify as corporate espionage because it's old historical records and he's not using them to undermine Tozai News being Futaki being clingy over Yamaoka? (I know that wasn't the reason, but the way it was structured in the previous chapter sure made it look like it was.) Utter garbage.
