Also there seems to be a lost in translation on when she smelled the jacket.

It's likely that she said "おじさんのにおいがする" (Ojisan no nioi ga suru)
Which can mean either "This jacket has uncle's smell on it" or "This (jacket) smells like an (old) uncle" which means basically it reeks of something that we consider old. This can be the reason why he was shocked when he heard it.
