It had some good incarnations back in the day, but it feels like since then there have been at least a dozen crappy harems for every semi-decent one. (Let alone the ones where they're all rivals, but they all love and care for each other like a family. 🥰 )

Fair enough, but at least they're not monogamous-because-reasons that don't fit the story and feel like they had to happen because of RL considerations… society's attitude, "surprise" endings to be "different", etc.

(Among other infamous examples, Negima really should have ended with "the polygamous duo" or some other combination. Not with the author's wife's expy. And I still think Hina shippers got what they deserved, with the out-of-nowhere derail of DomeKano apparently triggered by them abusing the author on her Twitter.)

A properly done throuple is actually much more difficult to write because each member has to uniquely synergize with two different people instead of just one. Three variables are always more complex than two.
