To be fair, with how the puppetry magic is shown here, it's a lot more complicated that your basic examples
you basically have a telekinetic powers, and from what we know there is currently no way for people to know if something is being controlled by the magic or not, if you can't even recognize one then how would you defend against one ?
with your basic elemental magic, even if you encounter an enemy with it you can always counter the elements
but you can't do so with puppetry magic, because you can't even detect it
And regarding the assasination, it make sense that it is regarded as bad or even outright being banned just due to the fact that no one really knows if it's true that someone is controlling a person, a doll, or even a weapon unless they saw it happening with their own eyes, i could also see that you can kill someone and blaming puppetry magic for controlling you because no one can prove otherwise that you were not being controlled

Yea It's why I feel like the real reason is because it's too powerful and not in the right family's hands.
It's easy for the royal family to toss around the accusation that puppet magic is just an assassination tool and should be looked down on.
The Kingdom pretends to be based on "Might makes right" but in reality it's more like "showy might makes right".
They are perfectly comfortable with someone who can make huge fireballs or giant tidal waves because you know what fire and water is and it is very clear who did it.
But puppet magic and really any none element magic, is much harder to deal with, if someone tries to kill the king using fireball it can easily be dealt with, but his cutlery suddenly springing to life and attacking, where do you even start? who did it and how do you avoid getting killed when everything is suddenly a weapon?
