The king said it. The father has high ambitions and as a loyal soldier to the kingdom that's not only fine but beneficial in many ways. If Van held similar feelings then the Kingdom overall could boast a lot more strength. However as a father he's just ouch. He clearly cares more about his ambitions than his own sons. It's like watching someone min max their family.

Drowning people tend to pull the rescuer under, you gotta be careful.

I've heard the way to deal with that (in the Marines, at least) is to deck the guy being rescued in the face – that way, he's too stunned to pull you under.

Does the king see it as just helping the brother out, or does he see this as a form of kneecapping and punishing the father?

He definitely is doing a little bit of both. He's effectively taken both of the sons with potential and placed them as supportive influences to each other, and I suspect partially is rewarding the genuine loving feelings Van's big brother shown.

While also telling the Marquis to watch it and that he cannot mess up again (this also seems like it's gonna force him to pay attention to the two favourite sons as well as Van and Big bro too).

It was so incredibly touching to see a big brother cry in relief like that for his much younger sibling though, what a good boy. 🥺

Probably both? However I think it was to initially determine the character of the Marquis. Considering the major loss to the city and whilst being saved by the third party (our mc van), from being absolutely slaughtered. The marquis would be too stressed an frustrated to put on a mask and hide his true self infront of the king.

However after him witnessing how he treated his son Murica. Not to mention Muricas & the Marquis's own reaction to being told it was Van that saved them and of Van's accomplishments, probably deduced that whilst the Marquis is a good warrior, his poor treatment of his children and ambitions have harmed his ability to do his duty.

Thus by taking Murica away to Van, Murica can foster their talents better without inevitably being thrown aside or being replaced by a more influenced heir like Murica stated near the end. This also punishes the marquis because he relies heavily on Murica but talks down and doesn't treat him properly like a son or heir. Probably so the king can kinda force the Marquis to see the error of his ways and how he mistreated his family.
