If they increase the time he has to train and study each day when is he supposed to actually do his job? Doesn't he already spend most of his day surveying the town, meeting with residents, and making items/repairs on the spot? Plus he makes the housing for every resident.

I don't really get why in a lot of these production type stories they basically write off labor costs as if it was free. Van based his spur of the moment pricing entirely in relation to raw material costs which is only one factor in setting prices for goods. He still has to make all this stuff and even if it's easy if he's the only one that can make the stuff it's going to get really tedious really fast. I guess to Van everyone else's labor has value but his doesn't.

After rereading the first couple chapters, it also highlights the difference between a good wartime leader and a good peacetime leader. The father is excellent at wartime but absolutely sucks at peacetime. Van is more rounded- good at wartime but excellent during peace.

But surely that level of strenuous activity for a 9-year-old would be actively detrimental to his development? And studying is good, of course, but when is he supposed to be doing actual lord work at that point?

It's implied that Espada is pushing Van so hard because he's a genius who picks things up incredibly fast and this is his personal project to take advantage of that to turn him into a veritable sage. Which, really, is just another unwanted one-sided responsibility dumped on him.

We have seen how Van works on desk work while Espada mentored him in few chapters back in the manga. He was studying and working at the same time, pretty much on-job- training. That's why we kept seeing him running away from Espada as he doesn't want to be on the desk all day. Also, bear in mind, that Van is optimistic (title call), so there is no need to worry about him and the territory. People trusted him so much too. About bad pricing, well, Van was making too humble of himself that he doesn't really know how to price it properly. Don't worry, Espada may have something in his mind.
