Damn girl, that was the perfect opportunity to confess everything there and then, as dense as the guy is to not figure everything out she really fumbled this 1. I also think that a lot of it comes from low self esteem on his part, he probably thinks quite highly of Sonoda as a competent and beautiful (we know she's beautiful from the comments everyone made when she took off the mask) subordinate and he likely feels she could get any man she wants so he isn't good enough for her. Add that to her communication disorder making her act quite cold to him, he probably has the idea that she might, maybe, think he's a good boss but has absolutely 0 interest in him outside of strictly work.

I’d agree with that but to blame him for not seeing through her lies like some commenters are doing is ridiculous. He’s not so dense that he’s not asking questions about it, but he’s being lied to when they answer.

He’s probably not confident enough to challenge the weak/strange answers that he’s getting and is afraid that it will cause him to be rejected yet again.

So she’s taking full advantage of the fact that he’s been walking on eggshells and accommodating her entire time. This whole time she’s not even really given indication that she even likes him aside from just continuing to go on the dates. As far as he knows she’s using the basket as a cover to have multiple boyfriends ffs. He’s too nice
