My theory is that as long as the fourth wall is active MC can never become a true "character" in this story even after he reaches the end of the novel story line, but whenever he becomes too immersed or the ability weakens he does become a character temporarily. So far, the status of characters like Gilyeong and Sangah seems more interesting to me, since they aren't treated as "characters" either.
Also I like the historical tidbits.

Late answer but it's simply because it's not as accessible as Solo Leveling.
OSR is plot heavy series, not only that, you're also required to know some Korean pop culture and a bit of history. This arc is a good example of that.

Solo Leveling is a simple, fun, over the top power fantasy. It transcends the cultural barrier that everyone can picks it up and enjoy it without knowing anything about Korea and Manhwa.
There's a reason why the JP version of Solo Leveling exist. And all they did was just change from Korea -> Japan and the character names, with a few tweaks here and there.
