So what if they are surrounded? Does that somehow make it better to stop running for the goal? Let the zombies get up and ready before charging them? Also why are there zombies in front? Where did they come from? This is a bridge for trains only as far as I can see. As far as they knew the zombies were coming from the train they just left. How does stopping to stare make sense in any way? Functionally all they did was let new zombies prepare for them and let existing zombies catch up. You tell me if that makes their situation better or worse. Well all know that the real reason they stopped was so the sea serpent could show up and clear the path for them and create contrived plot devices, but none of the characters in that situation could know that would happen (except for the MC who fails to capitalize on knowledge he should have). So I stand by my reasoning, surrounded or not, stopping was the worst thing they could do in that situation.
