Why did the webcomic get hit with the dmca lol
There's no copyright on this thing, it's a free webcomic.
Wait... Was this dmca'd?... I heard this is some free web comic thing so why the hell this got hit?...
I suspect that the DMCA demand about One Punch Man basically just said "take down EVERYTHING you have concerning the One Punch Man copyright, or else!", and that the mangadex administration decided to play it safe.
Though it's entirely possible that Shueisha, the publisher of the OPM manga, did also specifically include the webcomic in their request in spite of
not having any legal grounds for that.
During that whole DMCA disaster, a whole bunch of Japanese and Korean publishing houses teamed up to spam mangadex with tons of DMCA requests in the span of, what? A week?
You can bet dollars to donuts that they were counting on mangadex just rolling over without contesting any of those claims. And that, in turn, also means that this DMCA barrage would, in theory, have been a great opportunity to slip in a bunch of takedown requests that would not have held up in court.
In addition to that, those publishers were explicitly trying to cripple mangadex when they undertook that DMCA barrage. This time around, they didn't just take issue with a few specific works being on mangadex - they were now taking issue with mangadex existing at all. Simply because mangadex had now grown so big that they believed it to be a threat to their businessmodel.
What I mean to say is, Shueisha had a plausible motive for DMCA'ing the webcomic's fan translation even though it (AFAIK) had no legal basis for doing so.
