... and to even keep this tangentially on topic, I think Momiji is a pretty good example of someone whom doesn't easily fit by most GNC/trans culture labels. Like she clearly was super into the idea of being able to become a guy in this chapter, but she also enjoyed expressing femme in her girl power gyaru makeover in a prior chapter. Most labels won't easily fit. I'm not even sure "genderfluid" is a fair label to impose on her either.
From what we've seen of her I'd say lesbian would be the most apt term. The whole identity involves a bit of gender-queerness since womanhood is kinda defined by a supposed subservience and thus expected attraction to men. So to be a woman who's exclusively into women is to kinda reject what being a "woman" is (hence why shit like stone butches who go on testosterone, nb lesbians, he/him lesbian, etc exist. People who's gender identity might be a bit fuzzy but their lesbian identity is very clear)

Momiji being into the idea of turning into a guy stems specifically from her desire to be with Mahiro, not a desire to be a guy. At the moment she might not be fully aware that two girls can just be together, even as adults (and even get married in some countries).

Sorry if the quote gives you a scare, I automatically clench whenever I see a "quoted your post" on the MD forums because I'm like "oh god what did a phobe say now". But I think I can wholly concur with that assessment, I'm absolutely going with it. Momiji is beautiful and valid.

I think this sort of thing is why Onimai reached such a large audience, beyond the usual TSF loving crowd. From Momiji being a super relatable lesbian to Nayuta being basically one of the most accurate depictions I'd seen of autism in women.

I don't know exactly why but this chapter made me really worried that this series might actually have an end in sight. It is almost 7 years old, and it hasn't ever pushed it this close to someone figuring out Mahiro's past. I hope whatever divine powers that may or may not exist give Nekotoufu infinite inspiration to continue working this series until the well is bone fucking dry, else I may actually vomit

It's eight years old as of this chapter, actually. Somehow I'd be very surprised if Nekotofu ends it even if they do find out the secret. It'd be kind of a waste not to explore the narrative from there. And if the Highschool Onimai doujin is any indication, we got new seas to sail even then. (Seems odd to me this series keeps setting up the possibility of it being canon, maybe Nekotofu wants to write whole chapters in it?)

I predict the possibility the story only ends after Mahiro literally becomes science pregnant or gives birth. It'd make the "Mama" bit we saw before some foreshadowing.

You can marry Mahiro without either of you being a guy, Momij. Something to think about. 😉
To be fair, Japan (like many Asian countries) is quite heteronormative, even with the popularity of BL/Yaoi and GL/Yuri, so it's unlikely for her to have known already as a middle schooler, but technically yes lol. Tho, I do have to point out that while Japan has made quite the progress in the last few years, same-sex marriage still isn't legal there (and in fact, if they wanted to cut costs and stay within Asia, the only countries they could go to are Taiwan and Thailand [Nepal still has some issues to work out iirc]).

Then again, Mahiro's mom works abroad, so depending on where she works, things could work out ngl (assuming Japan hasn't approved same-sex marriage yet by the time they grow up, but based on the progress they're making, I'm rooting for Japan to be the 4th Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage lol)

For a series routinely brigaded by phobes, having an entire comment section filled with trans positive infighting goes a long way to explaining to me why us t’s are considered an easy target

woul you be willing to expand on this for me? Pls thx
Absolutely. Autistic people assigned female at birth in general do a better job of fronting or passing as neurotypical. Because empathy is pushed as a value on them at a young age like most AFAB people, they engage in something akin to hyper-empathy where they'll over-anticipate other's needs while failing other social checks. Nayuta fits this to a T, right down to keeping a whole stack of spare underwear in anticipation of Mahiro's urinary dysfunctions. (but even being described as a helper-fairy by others)

Given how much Nayuta even has to learn about socializing among female friends from Mahiro, I feel like she's pretty female autistic-coded in a way I don't see in manga/anime often. Like she's high-functioning without being on any sort of wavelength with people of her own age. And generally quiet or not making too many strong facial expressions in different social situations while not completely flubbing them.
