It's a story set in the modern day, and both big Mahiro and little Mahiro fit in the age group to use that kind of terminology, I think it works.

People often forget the goal of translation isn't just word for word moving the meanings of one language to another. It's to give the reader a similar overall experience as the audience of the original work. It's an art onto itself without right or wrong answers. Heck, even transliteration enhances the experience for some people deep enough in the culture. But "some" crucially, not all or even the slimmest majority.

In the raws, Mahiro responds with 「きっつぅ…！！」 (kitsu...!!); in this context, "kitsu" is a term generally used by younger Japanese people that essentially means "cringe." Given that the English word "cringe" in this context is almost exclusively used by younger western folks, the connotations are nearly identical.


Putting aside the fact that JP->EN translators have been translating "キツ/kitsu" to "cringe" for at least a decade, even Japanese people translate "cringe" to "キツ/kitsu."
