While he certainly haven't promoted a nice culture in the kingdom we don't really know if Laplace deserved a harsh punishment or not. She called it boorish and that it was revenge.

So Maxwell is Laplace's father. Honestly, I didn't expect that. That should debunk all the failed romance theories about her backstory with him. Guess I need to rethink Maxwell's reasons for twisting their society to become hyper-sexist against women during Laplace's imprisonment. Should keep in mind he's the kind of nutjob dad who would seal his daughter away for 300 years...
