I need to either reread this, or look for a good summary, because I can't recall anyone's name or what's going on :v
Basically 📖📖📖
Noah reads his Master Olivia’s childhood diary and learns she was the daughter of a grand human general, leading a war band named the Gingermen Knights in a crusade against the Beastkin. But after the Beastkin Leader Cattleya stalemated her mother in combat, the humans were forced to retreat. Olivia was abandoned to die for being weak and cowardly, as a young girl
Seeing her abandoned, Cattleya adopted Olivia and vowed to train her as an apprentice. Cattleya had 1 other adopted daughter, Lara (The Witch), and one Natural Beastkin daughter, Luna - now Olivia's sisters.
Eventually Olivia’s Human mom returned and killed Cattleya, but not to get Olivia back. She wanted to enslave Luna as a powerful soldier for the Kingdom, knowing she’ll be at least as strong as Cattleya oneday.
Luna faced Olivia’s Mom, trying to save Cattleya. Olivia, out of fear, left Luna behind. And rode off with Lara while Luna was enslaved. Olivia has been ashamed of this ever since.
Years later in the present day, a cynical and injured Luna escapes and finds her way back to Olivia. But she seems to have become prisoner to the Heretics - a mysterious group hated by everyone for creating the Monsters in this story.
The Heretics have done some kind of twisted experiment on Luna, giving her horrible scars and traits of a Monster. A snakelike woman appears, then abducts Luna again, and Olivia is left with no lead to her sister.
Eventually Olivia and Noah are attacked in their home, and glimpse how a Monster is created - when a Heretic Knight kills himself and several beasts in a pool of blood - while making a prayer to ‘Luna, Princess of Beasts’. The resulting monstrosity is born from their combined corpses, the blood, the flowers, weapons and items carried by the knight, all merged into one.
Defeating it, they meet again with the Snakelike Heretic. She had orchestrated this attack among others that they fought before, because she fears Noah and Olivia would sway Luna’s mind, before the Heretics’ plots are complete.
She claims to Olivia that the Heretics are a Sect who worship Luna as a Goddess, who serve Luna, and who intend Luna to become the new ruler of this World. Then tries to kill them.
Lara appears and does battle with the Heretic Lady to save the two, but suddenly the Heretic teleports Noah and Olivia to an Icy Tundra, so they will freeze to death.
Unexpectedly, as they succumb to the cold, Hoo-Hoo is able to shield them from the blizzard, heal their wounds, and warm them with a blanket of ghostly feathers
In the morning, stranded in the tundra but not frozen, they’re met with familiar faces. The Holy Knight who attempted to arrest Noah in the city, and the two wannabe disciple kids that Olivia saved (now apprentices of the Holy Knight). It seems word had spread from the capital that the Heretics were locating an artefact from the frozen region — 'the Holy Grail' — guarded by a Legendary Divine Beast.
This artefact of which - when filled with the black blood of Monsters - would allow them to corrupt the entire world at once, in any horrific way they desire.
The Holy Knight - himself a victim of the Heretics’ monstrosities, and obsessed with stopping them ever since - volunteered for the mission to locate the Beast.
Unexpectedly, they find the Beast already murdered and hidden beneath a snowpile - a giant sword pierced through its skull. Soon after, they are attacked by an incredibly strong, incredibly fast, carnivorous Giantess, who the Holy Knight recognises as an escaped criminal from the capital.
They have an adventure in the Snowy North where several things are brought to light.
- The Giantess - ‘Davi’ - was not the one who killed the Divine Beast, and she isn’t one of the Heretics either, but the Heretics sent her that way to kill anyone snooping too close.
- The Divine Beast was killed by a different, older Giant, who seems to be part of the Heretics. They also have taken the Holy Grail.
- Hoo Hoo isn’t an Owl, but a chick of the Divine Beast — who was a magnificent feathered birdlike creature. He fled to Noah and Olivia’s home after the Heretics slaughtered his Mother and all of his siblings. Hoo Hoo only survived because he was the most frightened, and hid in fear of them.
- Davi calls the Heretics ‘Luna’s Friends’, and the Holy Knight calls them ‘Believers of Luna’, strongly implicating Luna again
Noah and Olivia part ways with the three Holy Knights, deciding to journey home see what happened to Lara and the Heretic.
The night they leave, they meet a Goat-Beastkin named Mie, who if you look closely seems to have been stalking them for a while.
A crazed old human knight from the crusade wanders in, and lashes out at Mie, saying Beastkin aren’t welcome here after all the humans lost in the war.
They invite Mie to travel home with them instead, and Mie accepts.
Mie has a strange immediate interest in the two of them. Mie asks gleefully if the two of them are in love. But Mie seems very frustrated when Noah innocently reacts with basically a “?” Mie tries to push Noah to say he loves Olivia, and gets more frustrated when Noah still doesn’t decide he loves her.
Meanwhile ever since they met Mie, Olivia has been having repeated nightmares of the day she abandoned Luna. In the day she’s become paler, and her eyes become much darker. Her attitude as well is becoming more sullen and depressed.
Suddenly one morning as Mie sleeps they’re attacked by a Monster again. To their shock, the Monster is clearly the Old Knight who attacked Mie before. Olivia beheads it, but to their surprise, the decapitated head finds the lucidity to speak. It thinks this is a dream, and in his few lucid moments suddenly recognises Olivia.
Olivia recognises the Old Knight too, he was a former member of the Gingermen Knights. He remembers her as the “Little Ollie” who the Commander abandoned. Olivia asks him where her Mother is, and reveals to Noah she started hunting Monsters so she could train, search for, and oneday defeat her Mother. The Monster reveals that while they were stranded in the mountains, there was a hostile takeover of the throne, and her Mother has since crowned herself “The Iron Queen” of the Kingdom.
Meanwhile, back in the kingdom, The Iron Queen reveals that she has been monitoring Olivia in secret. A noble figure, Lady Clifty, appears, and arrests the three Holy Knights on false charges of being Heretics. It’s revealed this noble Lady Clifty, was actually the snakelike Heretic from before. She has captured and crucified Lara in a dungeon, and arrested all of Lara’s supporters within the Kingdom. Davi also falls down from the sky into the Capital, still alive (long story, she got launched into space previously)
Clifty reveals her plan is to use the massive stockpile of Monster Blood Lara keeps underground for research.
Now she only needs Luna to carry the Holy Grail to the Kingdom, and with the blood, they can begin its ritual.
Meanwhile, she communicates with Mie, who is revealed to have been a Heretic working for her all along. It seems she intends for Mie to dispose of Olivia and Noah far away, so the ritual goes on undisturbed.
