I feel like there's an eensy-weensy inherent conflict between the messages, "you're cute just as you are, you don't need to try to be girly" and "it's worth putting in just a bit of maintenance to be beautiful, just like this other thing you care about".
Though it does seem reasonable for someone who is both a hairdresser, and sensitive to not fitting in with gender expectations. (Coming at it from either angle gives different results, why not give both bits of advice and see which helps, that sort of thing).
