@ZaidValRoa To be fair to Yamada, he at least seems 100% certain that he doesn't have a chance anymore. Ninomae and Yamada seem similar in that regard. Ninomae actually has a chance with the protagonist, but I don't think she sees it.

Honestly, that dude is just creepy as this point. A man move on if he fail to get the woman he want, accept it like a man and get on with it, not obsessing about that woman all the time till her SON got into your old high school. Just a creepy loser, I wouldn't want someone that always thirsty for my mother to be around her. His whole character is making this manga less enjoyable, like you eat a 5 star Michelin dish and find out that there is half a cockroach in your dish.

@Monky to me, the real 4D chess pro player move was the headpat: positive reinforcement for recognising her mother as a non viable partner AND she present herself as a motherly figure he could also date. If, by any chance, he watched the last page, negative reinforcement, with the implications he is not being as subtle as he think and that people would watch and judge, plus a motherly scold.

The people thinking she has resigned clearly are reading a different manga.

Also, since Sophocles wrote the Oedipus Rex in the 5th century BC, it is not ok to marry your mother.

Let's not forgot something about Oedipus Rex: He didn't actually know she was her mother. Noone really did. They learned much later at the end (I think. I don't remember the end that well. It's been a while since I read about it).
