The dark elf knew what was in a cart because of a magic in it to keep things cool. Kobo then realized that they could potentially encode every crate with specific magic separate from any practical needs.

They've basically come up with an idea for magical QR codes and scanning so that the contents of a crate, cart, ship, etc. can be determined and recorded quickly and easily.
