Rereading this, I realise the original Japanese for "absorption" must be something like "draw in". That's why the dude thought it's a useless skill, which supposedly only allows him to move a pebble towards himself and that's it. But with the translation being "absorption", it not only makes such a misunderstanding look strange, but in fact it doesn't even make sense. If a gamer (since he's one) gets a skill called absorption, this very thing of absorbing someone, or something, else's skills or attributes is what would first visit their mind.
