In the WN everything up to curing the zombification and telling Vasiel that his friend Toramaru is waiting for him still is the same, but there it turns out that Vasiel is just a coward who never though of Toramaru as being his friend and only said what he said in order to escape since he was constantly afraid the big lion would eat him. He still fucks off back to his elf village and Toramaru goes off to become Nore's friend and guard lion at Nore's house, but instead of Vasiel having a brief touching reunion it's Vasiel admitting to Toramaru's face that he never thought of him as a friend as was just too afraid of being eaten by him, etc. Toramaru's still sad, but it's a bit of a different tone to it as a result of all that.
