@StixSis Are you seeing not a single chapter at all? What if you opened the page in incognito mode? Is this the only manga it's happening in?

A shame that this got axed, I actually liked this one. The MC was likable, and the girls were well-rounded. They barely gave Eri any screentime, but I have no problem with that. I feel like there was too much favour put for Aika, and they could've handled the awakening of feelings better. Hakua was cute, Reiko was charming, Karen went from a bad tsundere to a good tsundere, and I liked the maid the most. It's guaranteed that the end would be with Aika, what with the flashback and all, but I'd rather no ending. It was an abrupt stop, but it was pretty fun.

Manga got axed because it got killed by its own fanbase. The Light novels for this series have not even been translated into English (except for the first 2 volumes and a bit of the 3rd volume) and the rest might never will be. I don't like series that have concluded with a rushed ending or an improvised one, I guess that's life. I mean at least complete the English Translation for the Light Novels. Sayonara... Shomin Sample.

I think this would have made an interesting novel-based game where you could select the heroine.
Yeah it got axed but I still re-read this now and again.

Shame this got axed, but it was understandable, and frankly I don't mind considering what happened.

For the curious, the short version of why this manga (and the light novel it was spawned from) died:
If you've read most of this you will know that a certain heroine is going to win (I won't spoil in case a new person reads this). Despite protests from LN readers that that kind of win would be stupid and cliché, the author decided to go through with it anyway, but unfortunately he couldn't even be bothered to make it interesting. I am somewhat fuzzy on the details since this is something I read years ago, but apparently it concluded with a crappy school festival arc where each girl confesses one after the other, and MC-kun brushes them all off one after the other, save for the obvious winner.

This caused such massive backlash that it led to the manga getting axed, and the rest of the light novels will likely never be officially translated to English.

Kimito, a commoner, is kidnapped by the Japanese nobility to be a "shoumin sample," or commoner sample for a school of the children of the nobility, taught in a school cut off from the outside world. The only blessing problem is that it's an all-girls school.

The story works the best with character development amongst its harem cast. Aiko and Karen become more confident as the story goes on through their arcs, a treat to see. Seeing these rich ladies be near-humilated by Kimito's basic knowledge of the commoner's world gives an almost revolutionary feeling, seeing the nobility's social standing gives them unimaginable wealth the masses can never achieve. These chapters are quite funny, in particular the various fads introduced by Kimito on accident.

Romance development is weak. Despite the many girls circling around Kimiko, their love for him feels more out of the curiosity of commoner's culture rather than genuine romance. Only two characters have what one can call genuine love for Kimiko, even if the other characters superficially love him. Of these two its made obvious who will win. This conclusion is not a problem given the shallow love most other characters have for Kimito, but it is very predictable.

Regardless of the romance problems, the harem and comedy more than make up. Its not a great series, in particular with a lackluster ending, but remains good in its own right.

7/10.

Well,there you go.

The English covers go blatant censorship by plasting the name right accross the panties.

I’m going to be honest the writer kind of set their own downfall like if the mc had went with the childhood friend or the first character that they had met it probably wouldn’t have ended with so much backlash as people usually prefer these characters but they chose to take a side character that no one paid attention to

Shomin Sample has a unique premise that got executed perfectly. This manga's absurd slapstick is one of the most original and consistently funny bits I've ever read! It is, without a doubt, Shomin Sample's selling point. Regarding every other aspect, they're okay. The characters fit perfectly with the world-building, but otherwise are still pretty one-dimensional. Note that this manga got axed, due to the fact that it kept going for 2 years after its source material had ended (positively received or not is arguable) and craze for the series as a whole has all but waned. So, the ending was rushed, multiple plot holes were left unanswered and the manga is just a giant waste of everyone's time - not unless you purchase the light novel to see how the series truly ends! Oooh!

This manga is a great adaptation of a memorable light novel - it did the best it could with the writing flaws it had inherited. If you're someone who enjoys the journey more than the destination, and can stomach harem as a genre, then Shomin Sample is definitely for you. Otherwise, meh. Thank you for the wonderful scanlations!

Something I really like about this series as a whole is its pacing. Major arcs separated by equally long slice of life moments make the world of Shomin Sample feels strangely real. Like - the life inside the story, around the main cast still goes on regardless of any development they may have, despite the closed-off nature of the premise and harem genre. In any other manga, I would have called pacing like this extremely messy and a hindrance. But I think for Shomin Sample, the pacing has worked to its advantage

Also it's kinda funny how because it got axed, the circumstances under which Kimito and Aika first met as children never got explained in the manga. Also also, I just adore how the author never once tried to hide his obvious favouritsm toward a certain girl and spent the most of character development on her. I think that for a harem series, generally an ending with one person as a victor is second-best, followed by a cop-out (which this manga unfortunately falls under) and preceded by a harem ending. So for the author to keep to his ideals till the very end (alledgely) despite feedback, I can give him nothing but respect
