"In Media res" is a pretty common technique for any story. If this was Chapter 1, the introduction of the actual "unique pull" of the story, the "lovers in the dreamworld" gimmick, wouldn't be properly shown until Chapter 2...at which point your target and potential audience (those who would have liked the gimmick) may move on, and your actual audience (those who stuck around for this first "prologue" chapter) may themselves become split on those who do/don't like the gimmick since their expectations of the story have formed (from the one chapter they've read, but it's all they have at the time).

No, I agree about the hook/USP, I just think that a whole chapter to fill in the blanks breaks the flow. The pertinent facts could have been covered in much less detail and spread out, or do what a lot of TV shows do and do the origin story at the end of a story arc. But to drop it in the middle of the story is not good practice.

a romance story about a girl being very in love with a guy spending 1 chapter showing how it started isn't dilly-dallying. this kind of stuff just isn't as interesting as a chapter 1, and starting with the ongoing dynamic the characters have (that you can actually expect to see while reading) is a much better experience for someone who trying to figure out if they would be interested in this story.

sometimes i check near the latest chapter for random series im interested in to see how the story and art looks on a normal chapter rather than the chapter 1 hook. same idea.
