It's actually pretty funny how this manga tries to be many things and fails to be anything.

It's trying for comedy. Its jokes fall flat.

It's trying to be tragic. The misery just isn't that deep. Or well, it is, but the shock factor is heavily dampened by the sheer amount of bad jokes in every chapter.

Personally, the story that this manga tries to convey is an interesting one; you know, how the actions of others can bring a person to a dark place. I respect it. In an era where the best sellers are random isekai manga where the MC is surrounded by an army of women for no other reason that plot, the premise behind this story is...refreshing.

But the execution is terrible. Potential wasted. The MC calls himself gloomy, but cracks way too many jokes and is way to sociable. He's around the women who've made is earlier years depressing but still interacts with them as though they're amiable acquaintances (could even toe the line of them being friends). I suppose there's supposed to be some measure of suspense in disbelief considering, y'know, it's manga, but there's no bungee cord that can suspend this. Sad to see actually.

I think this manga had good potential, but was poorly executed. It feels very much like a classic example of ā€œshow donā€™t tellā€.

The MC says something that signifies his traumas like ā€œIā€™ll never help you again,ā€ and we witness several flashbacks throughout the manga and this kinda feels like the artist is spoon feeding us information which makes the story feel impersonal, like Iā€™m reading about his life in a text book.

IMO it would have been better to show how the trauma completely interferes with any normal day-to-day function. Going to school with all that trauma is already kind of odd, but itā€™s necessary for the setting of the story. The manga would have been better (imo) if they showed him struggling to do something basic and the thoughts and guilt involved with failing to do so.

And I think this is where the problem with the art lies, the MC has no light in his eyes AT ALL. which is typical of anime, but only when the character is shown to be completely broken or depressed, something that the MC isnā€™t shown to be due to the nature of his interactions. So he just ends up looking weird and awkward, given how he acts pretty normal.

Overall, the premise is interesting, but the characterization of the MC and execution of the story was botched.

The idea of having a bunch of characters with different tropes of drama with the main character is genius, only if you consider it as a comedy cuz all of them are incredibly dumb, self-centered and unable to communicate. The problem is that this seems to be not intentional, since the author is constantly mixing it with normal comedy. Either ways, every time there is an inner monologue or the girls show tears and frustration I burst out laughing.

Also MC's behavior seems waaaay to close to the ol' 'tism. For some reason, I have seen a lot of these romcoms with clearly neurodivergent characters that are simply characterized as "quirky". This could also make it very interesting if the author focused a bit on that, but of course not, since neurodivergent people barely exist in the manga world.

After reading Chapter 8.3, this seems to be a deliberate design to show he is already broken at the start. The only one time MC has light in his eyes is in Chapter 7, page 31.

But I do agree the execution is more like a dumpster fire, though quite a bit is due to the way the WN was originally written. Maybe if Four Color Goddesses get a manga it would be better.

Your comment described so eloquently how I felt after reading a single chapter, to the point that I'm just buffled.

His mother neglected and was unreasonably mad at him.
His sister almost killed him and told him to disappear.
His first crush told him she liked him and got a boyfriend within the week.
His second crush destroyed his potential to play basketball and told her friends she was nice to him out of pity.
Dude is broken beyond repair and they're trying so hard to put him back together.
everyone is trying to make mc feel better and apologize to him
and he thinkst they are messing with him and everyone hates him

Masterpiece lmao

Don't take the plot too seriously this one is more of a tragic romcom gag played straight. Its pretty funny with how insane the plot is. MC is just as crazy but mostly because he doesn't state his thought well that it creates serious misunderstanding, but MC is so nonchalant about it it creates even more tragic plot element! which makes the reveal ten times funnier than it should.
Don't take the dark undertone too seriously and read this as dry humor coming from the Author and you'll have a have a better time digesting the story.

Did I forget to mention all the Harem Heroine are bat shit insane in the worst way possible? Even worse than a e-girl causing unnecessary drama you say? yes... So drop your trousers and read on brother!

Recommend it 8/10

I decided to go back to this manga and I feel like the art isnt bad in a stockholm kind of way. As far as chapters go, its an okay adaptation.

Idk why Im supposed to care?

His mother has been neglectful of her children for so long that his older sister has to take care of him

His sister was then forced to take care of the both of them. After sometime in her childish frustration of being forced to grow up and take care of the MC, nearly kills the mc in an accident and blurting out her frustration on the MC that he should just disappear
He is only like around 2-6 years old at that time

In his attempt to disappear himself, he left his house much to the horror of his mother and sister. His sister very much regrets what she did and its whats fuels her emotions of incest

He thankfully found by his mother's sister(aunt) before anything dangerous happens and she hypnotized him to never kill himself.

Then you add all the stuff that happens with other girls and you get a somewhat functional depressed boy that just has to suffer.

another missery porn

Its something a goth or emo would like. There are also worss misery porn out there where you get cucked with catharsis and horrible people get away with the shit they do.

Itā€™s unfortunate that an enjoyable dumpster fire like this canā€™t get a dedicated translator. Iā€™d read 300 chapters of this over the garbage Rent-a-gf any day.

It's actually not bad. It's like wanting something to be dark, but not commiting into making it dark for real. So if I'm not wrong, he's just getting trauma from misunderstandings and small lies that weren't resolved. Something that seems to sow seeds of doubt within you that you can't seem to trust what goes on in your life. It is what it is.
