WN and LN both ends the same way. as far as i'm concerned the manga does too. it is (quoting the author) an "unfinished story" (cf. last chapter's comments for more)
Maybe the story was rejected for an anime by every studio, so the author gave up on the story in order to work on a new story that would have a fresh chance to become an anime. It's the anime that drives license and merchandise sales where the author can have a chance of collecting royalties (as long as the Chinese pirates don't ignore the copyright and trademarks).
