it should, while he can't exactly control it, the skill automatically selects targets that attack the user as well as the fact that emotions can indeed indicate skill use, so if he focuses, he might be able to force the activation to target/s that the skill didn't automatically select as seen in this chapter, albeit it only ever so slightly activated which was shutdown the moment the enemy declared backing off for the moment

Just basing my comment on his previous fight against the faux Necrolord—Slad couldn't target him half the fight because he didn't attack Slad directly or explicitly expressed his animosity, but it was the moment he proclaimed that he would kill Slad that the debuffs took hold immediately.

that guild abducts the elf, slad goes to rescue her and while doing so, they specifically don't target him. they'll start slapping the efl around, or threaten to hurt her if slad doesn't obey them.
this'll help slad to turn his automatic skill into one he can activate at will

He probably doesn't know all the details.
The debufs are hard to hide, but the conditions are also hard to probably tell.
What would be clear is, if you fight him you weaken and die. They probably don't know the condition is to try to attack him. A worry is, if Slad attacks can you defend without triggering it. So if they don't know its exact details its for sure a worry.
Also remember he does in fact want to recruit Slad, so a fight isn't really to his benefit.
