Now I want to see the early notes or that original draft that was mostly bickering, especially if it's long stretches of it, rather than frequent-but-short.

It would be a fun writing exercise to tell the story of a relationship only through the dialog of the couple's arguments, without the surrounding context, wouldn't it? If that's what the author likes writing, I'd give reading it a shot. After all, most bickering couples aren't actually fighting about the thing they're discussing at all. Lots of room for nuance and dramatic revelations, there.
