To be fair, he did admit to causing a situation that was entirely good for the MC. I believe his life there in the "poor" group ended up being better then it would have been as the VIP, from the MCs POV. Not even counting the clean up the MC mentioned. He was asking for gratitude there.

Considering the whole fujoshi character thing, which served absolutely no lasting purpose in the plot, I'd say the author would have liked to make this series shounen-ai, but was likely forced to abandon the idea for the sake of selling the series to publishers.
