Oh yeah, the friend is definitely sus. My original thought is that he is the reason she doesn't like guys...like she dated him back in middle school or something, but I don't actually think that would track with what we know so far of her.

He definitely knows something and him reacting to her name says something. Doesn't mean he has any romantic interest in her, though, he just may know that she is using a different name at work compared to school so he knows her real identity. Don't forget that the friend is the one who introduced our MC to the job, so it is always possible he introduced our FMC to the job too.

The "complication character", that only serves for temporary drama. Lovely. I'm not even spoiling stuff, I'm just predicting the future because of course the author would introduce a stalling strat.

Instead of a stalling strat, this is more likely to be a spanner thrown in the works to disturb the “just friends” relationship dynamic, by giving a sense of urgency to the FMC. I doubt she’s actually a serious rival, just an important character for this arc.
