Damn that old man is projecting so much... He seems like he's saying all those things because they relate to him and he just wants to spread his own feeling of inferiority onto Jorou because he's new.

He probably saw how he was kinda similar to Jorou in the past when he was young and ambition less and wanted to make Jorou feel as pathetic as he was to make himself feel better.

But the difference is Jorou actually tried and didn't give up, he actually held strong and seeing that made the old man realize even more how pathetic he is, and he could handle it.
