@Yamibi: "Some" is still way to many. We also have some problems with racism here. (On a side note, it seems like the "nationalism" thing recently became a bigger problem in our neighbouring countries, than here.) But there are laws, that forbid that kind of discrimination by e.g. those kind of businesses (shops, restaurants, etc.) I always forget, that such laws might not be establish everywhere on earth, but a leading industrial country like japan...

@aichan @yamibi

Aichan, is what Debito does really problematic? Can you explain why?

From what I have read about him in the past, he is a naturalized Japanese citizen, formerly American. And he sues Japanese businesses that use illegal, discriminatory language -- like saying "Japanese only" or "No foreigners". In the United States, this would be a very normal thing to sue a business about and force them to change their policy.

(On a personal note though, i believe private businesses should have the right to discriminate - but this is a very minority viewpoint in the U.S.)

The ingredient that was added to the stuffed peppers is yuzukosho. It's condiment made of fermented chili peppers and yuzu peel, a citrus fruit, a chili paste basically.

Two things:

I like how this is a low-key cooking manga. ?

Also the healing magic part has to be a 100% foreshadow and setup to something that's going to happen in the future. Maybe something like a cute chapter on the main male lead getting sick and her taking care of him. Or maybe something a lot more serious. Not sure what it will be.

personally i lived in japan for two years, never encountered anything I'd describe as racism, but i mainly hung around the suburbs of Tokyo and Central Kyoto so if you mean somewhere else i can't vouch for that.

Other then that, being able to speak japanese might help not feeling offended since i can actually make myself understood, the fact that the shopkeepers don't always want to serve you is not because they dislike you, it's because they can't speak english very well and rather just not bother with that costumer, not uncommonly trying to push the "bothersome" english speaker on the one they perceive as the best english speaking employee in the shop, so you can see one or two employees pushing a third one sometimes while the third one tries to reject the whole thing. this happened to me a few times, and when i started speaking japanese they got a whole lot less nervous.

Also it doesn't seem to be racist at all to me. If I were to put his skepticism into an "ism", I'd say it's ageism and a bit of sexism. If Chris was older, he'd hold more weight to her way of thinking more. The author is intentionally doing this as the main character learns he keeps underestimating her since Chris keeps showing she is much wiser, more mature, and more experienced than he was expecting, despite his assumption about how people her age should be. But that's probably because the author is wanting to setup a romantic relationship between the two without him thinking he knows more due to his age.

The sexism part is just how the main character keeps assuming how Chris is like purely due to her being female. An example is how he uses the whole "makes your skin more beautiful" bit.

I'm fine with both as it is realistic to what I'd expect from a 38 year old. I wouldn't do the sexist stuff, but definitely would be guilty of ageism if I were in his shoes.

I wouldn't call stuffed Peppers Japanese food anyway. It's more a Western food. I would think eating them with chopsticks would be hard too.

Some of you guys make my brain hurt, just enjoy the manga. I find people who look for racism in others, tend to be either racist themselves, be overly conscious or just ignorant. Have a good day and settle down all.

Edit(let me make it a bit better, click typing is hard):
Some of you guys make my brain hurt, just enjoy the manga. I find people who look for faults in others, tend to have similar faults themselves, be overly conscious of things that just aren't there or just ignorant. Remember people don't give offence, offence can only be taken. You may think someone if being offensive but it doesn't mean it was meant that way, there are many other things that are more likely. If you try and make enemies out of others you're just going to make life harder for yourself. Have a good day and try to settle down and enjoy the story.

I feel like the people saying shit about racism in japan have never been to japan, i did and i can tell ya that most of the stuff you see on the web is bs.
I felt more at home and was treated with more respect than in my home country(netherlands). The japanese disliking westerners(which isnt even that big) is completely justified cuz majority of the west is dogshit and they ruin other countries. Americans are the worst offenders, the shit i saw them do was retarded.

Well, the first dishes he cooked in this story were italian...
If there's a thing I like in this manga, is that it doesn't do the usual "superior japanese food" cliche.
