In this week's fifth plot tangent we have unhinged menhera vs expert manipulator in their natural habitat.

Speaking of tangent, hope you all survived this mass influx of back-to-the-first-chapters uploads from Comikey, Manga Up and K-Manga messing up your feeds.
Speaking of, what the fuck is even with that?

There are some gaps regarding the characters’ motivations. The person giving the spoilers was kind of cryptic about it, but basically, everything that’s happening was orchestrated by Hanabi’s sister. Both Kirigaya raping and sex-trafficking Hanabi, and Nanao drugging and attempting to rape the MC (she tried, but his penis didn’t get hard).

As for why Hanabi’s sister would set up these heinous acts, even against her own sister, that’s where it gets foggy. She’s messed up in the head because of trauma related to their father. The spoiler source said their father didn’t rape Hanabi’s sister, but whatever he did caused her to develop a twisted love-hate relationship with Hanabi.

As for consequences… there are basically none for anyone. Hanabi’s sister just gets a warning that if she tries any more crap like that, they’ll tell their father. Nanao is fired, and that’s it. And Kirigaya will get beaten up by the MC at some point, but that’s the maximum punishment he’ll get.

I forget, who is Nanao? Anyway, Buddhism has a thing (for the lack of a better term) that promotes forgiveness. If you've ever seen some a-hole getting away with something by an MC in manga or anime, now you know.

I see it now. Hanabi is a necessary element of the teenager ecosystem. Without the Apex Hoe to keep them in check, smaller hoes like Ayana propagate and start throwing things off balance.

I just blocked them as soon as they appeared. No more spam.
I had to as well.
Since those official publishers mostly "uploaded" the first few chapters on MD just as a promotion to incentivize us to go to their website - yet there were no new chapters past the ones that were already scanlated - I didn't see the point of having them pollute my feed.

No one reading this chapter would be able to tell you that Hanabi was just saved from being brutally raped, after having been gang-raped in a public bathroom for a month.
😕

Seriously, what the hfil? "Revenge on me?", "blindsided" Why are you surprised? Did she hit her head offscreen while running to this scene?
😒

This author has a problem with, idk, tonal pacing or something. In her main work's current arc the current love interest is being gangraped and impregnated while the readers are being subjected to a lobotomized villain's origin story. As if anyone could possibly care.

According to Shoseki ranking data, the physical sales of Volume 6, released on August 19, 2026, have flopped. The volume covers up to Chapter 46, which is where the story jumped the shark. It didn't even make the weekly rankings. In the week it was released, it would have needed to sell at least 1,000 copies to appear in the rankings, but it didn't.

Here's a graph showing the sales of the physical volumes.

*The numbers for Volumes 4 and 6 are merely illustrative; the actual sales were lower than that.

Thanks for the chapter!

I'm a bit confused about the data. If 1,000 is the minimum to register, how is volume 5 at 933 and volume 4 at 1,250? Shouldn't they also look like volume 6's representation?
Also, volume 6 ends with chapter 46? Does volume 3 cover the end of the novel's story? Is that why there's such a drop-off?

With Shoseki rankings, you can only estimate sales if a manga reaches either the weekly or monthly ranking.

Volume 4 did not reach the weekly ranking during the week it was released. At the time, a manga needed to sell at least 1,250 copies to appear in the ranking, so Volume 4 sold fewer than that.

Volume 5 did reach the weekly ranking, so it was possible to estimate how many copies it sold. During the week of its release, a manga needed to sell at least 900 copies to appear in the ranking.

Volume 6 is in the same situation as Volume 4: it did not reach the weekly ranking, and during its release week, a manga needed to sell at least 1,000 copies to appear in the ranking. So we can conclude that it sold fewer than 1,000 copies that week.

As for the novel, there are only two volumes. The first volume, which contains the content from the web novel, was covered by the first four volumes of the manga. The second volume of the novel starts at Volume 5 of the manga.

And yes, Volume 6 ends at Chapter 46, but the material the manga is covering now comes from the second volume of the novel.

As for why there was such a drop in sales from Volume 3 to Volume 4, I honestly don't know. The second volume of the novel was released on December 22, 2023. The second volume of the manga came out on January 18, 2024, the third on June 19, 2024, and the fourth on September 19, 2025.

According to Japanese readers, the novel was canceled because of the poor reception of Volume 2, although it's unknown exactly when the decision to cancel it was made. So maybe it was canceled after Volume 3 of the manga was released, and some readers who liked the novel decided not to continue buying the manga after that? I don't know.

The continuation of the manga after the novel was canceled is a mystery to me, especially considering how low the physical sales figures are.

If I'm understanding it correctly, the minimum ranking is the 500th rank. So volume 5's week would have whatever was 500th ranked be 900 copies.
I have that correct?
🤔

So that's not that bad is it? Scrolling through (what I presume to be) the list there are a lot of established titles clogging it up. At some points even Dragon Ball makes the ranking. There isn't any conclusive proof the novel was cancelled right? Could be that it ended where the author wanted. The author's other work also didn't make the ranking right? And that's still ongoing. 🫤

Also after skimming through the list I have come to the conclusion that you're all perverts.

Yes, the manga at position 500 sold around 900 copies, while this manga is at position 487, so we can estimate that it sold around 933 copies. Although it’s an estimate, it’s fairly reliable. I’ve cross-referenced Shoseki ranking data with ORICON data for other manga before, and the numbers tend to converge.

For the genre, it’s bad. If it were some sort of erotica dumpster fire, it would be an okay number, but it isn’t. That said, physical volume sales are only one indicator, since digital sales can be 10–30x higher than physical sales. But again, for this genre, a sign of success would be reaching the monthly rankings, which it never did.

As for the cancellation, I’ve seen multiple Japanese readers say that it was canceled due to poor reception. If you check Amazon, the second volume has a 3.5 rating with mostly negative reviews, while the first volume of the novel has a 4.0 rating with mixed reviews. So you can see that it was never really a success to begin with.

As for the author’s other works, I don’t know. I’ve never run the numbers.
