There's a lot of variables/elements here~

Im of the party that agrees that Hanabi doesn't deserve this type of punishment. The writer used the flashback to reinforce the idea to the reader she deserves it.
But I would also argue that despite how dark this seems, it might be closer to reality than many might think. There are many instances in Japan where people (often young women) are manipulated into situations where a large debt is accumulated and selling one's body is the "easiest" way of paying it back fast. The perception of prostitution is also different in Japan.
I do feel the story will go in the direction of Hanabi asking MC-kun for help, but how long it takes her to do that, well, thats a whole other thing itself.
Then, not to mention, how these types of plot points are commonplace now in manga, a trope if you will. "Its expected" that a story could go in this direction.

I do agree also, tho, im not a fan of where this is headed. I was excited with this story at the beginning because they seem to try and get away from the tropes, but...I guess not(?)
