...Because the people in the town were in danger? Just because they can stop the big bad doesn't mean it'll stop the people caught up in the attack from getting hurt. By being present at the location of the attack, they can actively make sure nobody gets hurt too badly.

Plus, it looks like they didn't know for sure that it was Lydia until just now (they had their suspicions, but no solid confirmation), and the MC didn't really prioritize tracking her down when there were people there to protect.

It's a bit over the top to have that dead montage when it's fairly obvious she didn't actually die, but then again, Kara got the same as well. Which makes it more obvious.
