I imagine that the merchants could be up to all kinds of nefarious deeds, but certainly waking up the slumbering flame dragon is not among them...

Hmm...perhaps so. It could just be a byproduct of whatever it is they're doing, but MC may still need to form the contract to keep it from rampaging.

It's a habit I've kept on from another forum that writing something out in blue is the method to implicitly indicate one's sarcasm.

...Doesn't help anyone that doesn't also know that though for me to do it...

So to rephrase my original post into something simple and direct -- your post was an excellent call-out on the author's Vantablack levels of foreshadowing.
