I'm hoping this is more of a rekindling of friendship kind of story but I know it's definitely gonna be romance which is kind of a bummer (I like stories of friendship a lot more than ones about romance)
Still cool though. It really do be like that sometimes with drifting relations...

tbf it is the childhood friend's fault for losing. They got decade to confess their feelings, but they don't.

The uglier truth is that changing the relationship at the time is unexplored territory and often terrifying, especially if you're afraid of breaking what you have. Maintain this holding pattern for a couple years, and you'll totally succeed...in breaking what you have.
