What I don't understand is why Aqua feels the need to disguise in order to help them?

Because Aqua clearly know Kana really don't want to see him right now and would definitely refuse any training if he was the trainer, so they had to do this.

Kana and Aque relationship was horrible recently because of Kana feeling betrayed/lost her crush.
