Are there any mainstream RPGs where you can level down, whether intentionally or accidentally?

I mean, Fire Emblem technically, although it doesn't actually reset your stats. It really just exists to let you get more level ups, and doesn't reset the internal level of the character.

(Fun fact the Title to the left is actually supposed to be read with the title to the right this time)

Not exactly a mainstream RPG, but Ragnarok Online had a system similar to that called "Transcendent." It lets you revert back to Level 1 but with higher base stats. As Blackwing stated, Fire Emblem also had a system where changing classes also resets you to level 1 but you get to keep your stats. I also believed Disgaea had a system similar to that.

Not exactly mainstream but Azure Dreams has an enemy that could cast a spell that drained levels. As in you legitimately leveled down with all implications of that if it hits you. It is one of the most hated enemies in that game due to that.

Final Fantasy Tactics had unusual trap that activated actual level down. Since you could activate it multiple times, it is usually exploited when people want to level with optimal classes for best status boost

Adding to what has been said, powerful Undead enemies in D&D can Energy Drain you and give you Negative Levels, which is functionally the same as levelling down (though it's not permanent if you cure it quickly).

I think level drain doesn't quite work the same way in D&D nowadays as it used to. Probably because it's just a huge pain in the ass to keep track of what you actually lose, and how you need to calculate your rolls compared to beforehand. Now, it's just a max health debuff in place of those dreaded level drains on certain enemies. Easier to keep track of, still fairly effective at ruining your day if you aren't careful enough.

@justforthelulz haven't played it myself, so take it with a grain of salt, but apparently "Hero Must Die. Again" uses that premise where you start out at max level and grow weaker over time.

In Demons' Souls not only could one of the bosses use a spell that leveled you down, you could trade in its boss soul to get a spell that lets you do it to other players as well with a short range One-Hit-Kill attack.

I'm kinda late to the party, but in Baldur's Gate 2, every vampiric creature can drain your levels; get to level zero and you have no hit points left, so you die (and can't be resurrected either).
What's more annoying is that the effect is permanent until removed, the recovery spell is a high level one and can be dangerous to cast in the middle of a dungeon (automatically tires out the caster), and you stop getting XP while level drained.
