I kinda liked Shield Hero for this reason too, Naofumi already had trust issues and was given a lot of good reasons to double down on them. It's not exactly a shining star amongst the already low bar of isekai, but I liked that it actually gave a believable justifcation for the whole "my closest female companion is a slave" thing. Maybe not a good justification, but definitely a believable one. Dude's ability to trust people was so shot that he felt there was nobody he could trust if they weren't a slave, and after getting to know him Rafu opted in to staying a slave to help soothe his mind, to show him that he could trust her and to show that she trusted him enough to not abuse it.
The whole willing slave thing is still a pretty fucked up situation, but it's an understandable fucked up situation that resulted from a broken guy with a fucked up mentality.

Shame that every other isekai to come after has to have the obligatory girl who loves protag for no good reason unconditionally so much to the point that she literally begs to be his slave forever and cries if he tries to free her so they can just be normal friends/lovers/spouses/whatever.

That was a big yapping tangent but basically yeah I'm also happy to see a guy who actually has a very good reason to be paranoid and it makes the romance interesting instead of making it feel like he's just being dense.
I really like how his relationship with his brother seems pretty normal too, he's not needlesly antagonistic, just a chill older brother who happens to be extremely handsome and popular with every female in a 50 mile radius.
elite ball knowledge, then he added the "slave" shield to promote the growth of his people (from village arc onwards, can't remember if Melty also got a slave crest hahaha).
not so long ago as a good example of your problem with series like this, the isekai walking manga, almost didn't add spoiler tag in case anyone hasn't read that manga, it's actually kinda nice
girl had to be slave because she has better treatment(?), like it makes no f*cking sense why they added the slave "tag" for the girl (the one that was brainwashed and used by the king) and now that appeared one of the girl that they were searching for, she didn't get the slave collar, but they are really being not subtle at all that the girl grabbed the slave collar anyway just to show "trust" on MC, like wuuuuut??
She got caught being guilty of... liking tohno?

Well she admitted to giving him specifically soda candy so i guess she is indeed guilty of catering to his likes
Now bro is sentenced to have a happy life and family with her, bro is cooked
In 5 years hes gonna be like "Like, I know shes my wife and all, but what if she just wants to use me to become family with my brother?"
I can't remember if it was this manga or another with a similar premise (like I kind of want to find that manga if it was another one hahaha), and the joke was... we just got our first grandson but I still should be wary if she's doing it to get closer to my brother.

I'd like to see her reaction to these fangirls moments as it happens. We've only seen her mildly annoyed but I got a feeling she's capable of soulcrushing damage.

Why wouldn't he be angry? They're still trying to use him while acting like they're not. And he got a sliver of hope thanks to literally the only girl that never treated him that way that maybe they wouldn't either, just to be reminded of these hoes being hoes.
Remember your brother's stalker? Did he accept her doing that? So why get angry now?

You know, why doesn't he just ask her if she's after his brother if he's so worried? The other girls don't seem to particularly care to hide it once they know he's not going to help, after all. Guess he's worried that if he tries to confirm it, she might not give him the answer he wants to hear, though.

I think he's angry now because the girls are so shameless about it and uncaring for his feelings. That girl at least recognized her actions as wrong, apologized, and has tried to make amends and be an actual friend.

Plus, creepy stalking aside, I think he recognizes her feelings as at least being deeper or more genuine compared to most of them. That might factor into his willingness to forgive, too.

I don't read many isekai. Is that, like, a common thing in them?! Begging to remain a slave?? What the fak!

They really did MC-kun dirty for too long. He got some deep-rooted issues cause of these hoes
well at least this justifies his being ""dense"" about her (and it's not dense, he just don't believe on it)

Because he knew from the beginning what she was doing, he was in high guard, and then she was open about her intentions but later stated that she would like to be his friend anyway, even if she keeps her original intentions.
IN that situations he was on low guard, specially because he tried something new (racing against his brother)

Honestly, absolute kudos to the TL. A very common cliche, but I rarely see someone getting it across as well as it was here (without the need for TL note). Sure sounds a tad bit awkward, but I was genuinely impressed at the way you managed to deliver it.
