I don't see it in MangaDex rules, and I am not aware of any other rulebook a group must adhere to when they sign a blood pact to become a TL group.
We are so cooked if the bar for being considerate of the community is "it must be written down otherwise it doesn't count."

Scanlation is a community-wide thing. It functions best when everyone cooperates and is considerate of each other. And part of that is not jumping on a work that is already being served by a group doing a good job. Because what's the benefit? There are dozens of series out there that have been abandoned or retired or ignored that need someone to give them love and attention, so focusing on one that doesn't solves nothing. And like has been said, there are lots of instances of good scan groups getting sniped by someone who does a worse job, a vocal part of the audience going "it's fine, I don't care who works on it if I get it slightly faster or regularly" and they end up questioning why they bother to work on it if people don't care that they're doing the job. So they quit. Then the new group is either a crap quality MTL/AI outfit that just spits out half-baked junk with no effort or is possibly a group that wants to do good but severely underestimated the time and effort requirements of doing quality work and ends up bailing on it when their attention shifts to a new video game or something. Then we're left with nothing.

It costs nothing for a group that wants to work on something to just talk to the previous group and ask "are you still working on this?" before they settle in. You want the commentors to be nicer to the newbie scan group, but why doesn't the newbie group have to be nicer to Uwaki? There's no reason it shouldn't go both ways.

That's basic human decency. How would YOU feel when you spend hours of work to do best quality stuff, just to get sniped by someone who did the same thing you did, but at much lower quality?

I mean, ideally I'd say the quality in my work would speak for itself, which you can see people commenting about throughout both threads on this chapter.

I'd say it's more concerning in their worry of being sniped they seem to have missed an entire (and I'd say fairly pivotal) page.

Edit: It does look like they've gone and fixed it now, but the irony is now I'm always going to double check.

We're cooked as a community if we're gonna be treating any new blood who do manga scanlation like the second comming of Hitler for not correctly guessing the unwritten rules of local etiquette. One would think that "the first rule" would be something like "don't steal other group's materials" or "don't deliberately alter the meaning of the text being translated", but no, apparently it is "don't scanlate if somebody else called dibs".
You want the commentors to be nicer to the newbie scan group, but why doesn't the newbie group have to be nicer to Uwaki? There's no reason it shouldn't go both ways.
For one, the newbie group taking effort to scanlate the chapter and upload it here was not an act of malice towards Uwaki, but the majority of the commenters declaring a witchhunt is malice towards the newbie group, so there's no "both ways" anyway. There's a tangible benefit to being nicer to somebody who didn't know any better, especially if there's a possibility of them making positive impact on the community, i.e. guiding them to scanlate something that isn't being actively worked on, but the community decided that effort, enthusiasm and skill should be rewarded by getting dogpiled on.
That's basic human decency.
It really isn't something obvious or basic. There are good reasons why the community developed disdain towards sniping, or the term of "sniping" in the first place, but those who were not simmering in the community for at least a year wouldn't necessarily know anything about it; it takes quite a few logical leaps to arrive to the conclusion of "uploading while some other group is actively working on the work is bad". A newcomer might as well come here thinking "sure would be good if more groups were working on my favourite manga! Chapters being translated faster, different interpretations of the original text - what's not to like?"

nice virtue signaling, you are so much better than everyone else here giving justified vitriol for a group breaking Rule 1 of TLing: don’t snipe an active series
It's not virtue signaling, dipshit. It's being a decent human. Someone is trying something for the first time. They're probably unfamiliar with the etiquette around translation. I'm not going to crucify them for doing something they enjoy. I'm going to be an adult and tell them why they're getting a negative reaction and how to avoid it. Grow up

"Pani swoje, a swoje. Każdy sobie rzepkę skrobie", a decently famous Polish saying from Polish literature, which (roughly) means "You do your thing and I'll do mine".

How does that relate to this?
If someone is alredy working on something, let them work on it in peace. If they stop working on it, you can take over (preferably after asking if they plan to work more on that or not).

"...wouldn't necessarily know anything about it [...]" <-- that's all the more reason to explain why it's a bad thing. Sure, throwing insults and not giving critique in a civil maner is not okay, but otherwise, it's a necessary thing. (Tho some ppl do deserve the insults they get. Saw it a few times myself when someone wouldn't do anything after they were asked nicely over and over again and were a d*ck in response).

About the part concerning "multiple interpretations". True, having multiple "view angles" can be a good thing, problem is, when the "other view angle" has an awful quality (not even talking about CLRD or TS, just the TL itself). When translating from one language to another, you need to know the language you tl from at a semi-decent level. MTL or AITL tends to make mistakes a decent ammount of times, which you won't be able to catch when you can't read the source text, which in result, makes the "other view angle" confusing, or at times, unreadable.

There is no such rule, stop making shit up unless you're at least a scanlator (although I'd argue you should be a decent one at the bare minimum for your words to hold any weight at all).

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Just to be clear: ganging up on the new guy is not something I commend. What I meant to say with my previous post is "shut up and use the ignore feature if it pisses you off so much" (emphasis on the SHUT UP), because everyone's free to do whatever they want and all I'm seeing is people trying to enforce non-existent rules. Maybe this guy just really likes the series and wanted to work on something he loves instead of digging up old and decrepit series no one cares about? Is that so unreasonable that you all needed to shower him with insults?

Just a reminder: you lot aren't entitled to anything and you don't get to complain in any shape or form, whatever may happen to a series. (You can show your support though, that's a given)

As a translator myself I can say it's not a pleasant feeling getting a series sniped, but that's because of how the reader-base behaves, not because of the snipe itself: don't give attention to something that isn't worth the attention in the first place.
Spreading misinformation and acting like you're some hot shit in the other scan group's stead doesn't help AT ALL.

See the issue is. The quality is so unbelievably bad. This person has absolutely 0 understanding of japanese. This is 100% completely AI mtl, and if it is edited the editor needs to be examined. On the last page. They decides to tl 兄貴 as Rei, but in the text bubble WITH THE EXACT SAME KANJI 兄貴 is tl as My brother <- still the wrong interpretation of this. It comes off as completely stiff, and lacking any actual nuance. There is also a MASSIVE difference between him having his brother saved in his phone as Rei vs Big Bro (a more proper way to interpret 兄貴) 兄貴 shows more closeness, and is less formal than お兄さん. Translating it as "My brother" just shows me this person has 0 actual understanding of the meaning behind the japanese text. This is pure unedited mtl garbage. There are instances when you could just say 兄貴 as just "brother" like if the reader already know this is his older brother its not necessary to include the fact that it is his older brother, but the choice for him to say "my brother" is just horrible.

The biggest issue with these people sniping is. Not everyone is going to know this group just randomly decided to snip. They will read the chapter oblivious to the horrifying job this group did, and read things that are just blatantly wrong. Stop white knighting these people. They deserve the hate they are getting 100%. Idc about the group doing the current tl. I care about the quality, and this quality just from a raw tl standpoint is just bad.

Bro you're keeping your mind so open your brain is falling out
There's a tangible benefit to being nicer to somebody who didn't know any better ... but the community decided that effort, enthusiasm and skill should be rewarded by getting dogpiled on.
A newcomer might as well come here thinking "sure would be good if more groups were working on my favourite manga! Chapters being translated faster, different interpretations of the original text - what's not to like?"
You're literally bending over backwards to avoid landmines to the point that your charitableness and optimism is worryingly close to blind contrarianism or bad faith discussion. Do you honestly believe it is complete chance, a pure love of the game, nay -- gentle and growing curiosity that led him to translating say, the latest fucking chapter in one of the most popular manga on the site??

Do you read his work and really think this is someone trying to figure out how to make a fan TL? Do really you see effort in anything he's done? Do you really think he spent time focusing on good image editing or re-reading and ensuring translation quality?

If it was his beloved manga that he wanted to put his own spin on, why not start with chapter 1? Hell, why not start with everyone's favourite proving ground, The Tsuntsuntsun... Girl manga?

There's literally nothing here of value. He's done absolutely nothing but try and steal clout. I'm shocked there isn't some watermark or payment site linked to his account in some way.

I don't condone personal attacks. And no, it isn't really a rule that you shouldn't snipe other groups. All I will say is, it is a new person's responsibility in any community to read the room before putting themselves out there. There are written rules, and there are the unwritten ones decided upon by the overall community. The former will get you banned, and the latter will get you reamed in the comments. No amount of "but it's not against the rules" will save anyone from this.

While I don't blame you guys for wanting to try your hand at doing this whole scanlating thing, the fact that you didn't spend a half of a moment to think "is it a good idea to do this to a series which already has somebody working on it? AND they're doing a pretty good job at it because what's out there already looks really good?" just kinda shows how...for lack of a better word, immature you all are. There's obviously some basic work and thinking that needs to be done before you should even contemplate trying to work on something like this.

If you're going to try to release something from a series that already has a group working on it, you need to do something that will encourage people to look at your work instead of the already established one. That includes: a superior translation, superior quality in the files (higher definition/resolution/DPI/etc), better cleaning/redrawing, better font choice, translating things they might not (like background signs), including notes about various references that might go overlooked, etc, etc.

You did none of those, and instead just threw up something that looks like it was done half-assedly in comparison to what's the established standard. So of course you're going to be met with condescension from people who already have a certain level of expectation when it comes to this series. The outright childish language and insults coming from people is a little uncalled for, especially since most people around these comments are just leeches who never donate or anything to the people actually working on these things, but I suppose they need something to do in their life.

Best of luck with whatever your group winds up doing, but I'm blocking it so I don't see anything from you again.

"None of this happened, but let's bring this up anyway so to pain them in worse light". Bit disingenuous.
He's done absolutely nothing but try and steal clout.
Steal clout. Damn. Is that a thing? Let me call the clout police, those motherfuckers need to be put in clout jail.
They didn't do "absolutely nothing", they scanlated a chapter, which is as much of a something as anyone can realistically do in this community.
Do you honestly believe it is complete chance, a pure love of the game, nay -- gentle and growing curiosity that led him to translating say, the latest fucking chapter in one of the most popular manga on the site??
I mean, as you say, there's no mention of payment site anywhere in the chapter, so yes, yes I do believe it was any of those things.
Do you read his work and really think this is someone trying to figure out how to make a fan TL? Do really you see effort in anything he's done? Do you really think he spent time focusing on good image editing or re-reading and ensuring translation quality?
For starters, I read his work so much so that I know that he is actually two people. Allegedly, or so says the very first page anyway. We are free to think that he is maliciously lying about being more than one person, because always assumming malice apparently is what we do in this community.
Translation takes effort, so does cleaning and typesetting, I am not sure why you're trying to make it sound like it isn't considered "effort" if it doesn't meet a certain standard of quality. Obviously they are not on par with Uwaki, but I didn't spot any translation issues; the cleaning/typesetting would benefit from more effort, but overall I wouldn't mind seeing them translate any other manga that isn't actively being worked on.

With this group, so far this hasn't happened
I never said it was about this group. A lot of times, when something like this happens (an unknown / new group / person snipes a series) they tend to have water marks and / or links to payment sites.

Unlike others, I won't be mean. You did a really good job with the translation for a first ever attempt. But people will be upset if you "snipe". Don't feel discouraged by the negative reaction. I would suggest just choosing a series that has no translation or hasn't been translated in a long time. You can use that as practice. But keep up the good work
Uwaki scans is the group translating the manga though, and no one else wants another group to try and translate the manga themselves when Uwaki is just doing it better. There's literally just no reason to try and snipe a manga from a good group, and it doesn't really matter if this is a first attempt or not. They just shouldn't have gone for a manga that was already consistently and well translated. Even if they did do translation much, much better, there's still not really a good reason to snipe a manga from another group cause you can just take your superior translation skills to a manga that isn't being translated.

Just in case the group sees this I just wanna say, keep doing translations. We'll always need more quality translations on this site, but know that the criticism/hate you're seeing is valid, and it is common. You're never gonna snipe a series without getting backlash, and sniping really doesn't help anybody. There are tons of manga that don't have any chapters at all or just don't have consistent or ongoing translation and you can practice on those. PLEASE, do not make a habit of sniping. It hurts your reputation, it hurts the morale of the group you snipe from, and it makes readers REALLY mad.
