And it does not have to be. Throuple is a catch all for a balanced, committed, non-hierarchiacal, consensual relationship between three people. Metamours don't all have to be romantic with each other. It would be a vee or hinge if they had partners outside of the trio but since they would be a closed triad*, they don't even let other people in the school hang out when together- throuple is the best and most recognized term for it.
