Just so new readers know: the plot is quite nice.
While he is a good guy, he really do this in the shadows (Not like many of the "assassin" who are as silent as Naruto when they kill someone). Much of the plot (from what I read in the novel) revolved about raising the strength of the family while keeping a low profile. Which is quite nice for once.

So excited about getting a comic! I’ve been reading the novel and it’s good. He really thinks things through

My gosh do I want to touch this? The novel was great but I’m afraid to see what kind of adaptation it got.

Fengling Tianxia is one of my fav authors. Some of his other works got butchered terribly by adaptation though I’m so afraid to try this one.

Edit: okay, first chapter. Already hit with a strong case of “Show, don’t tell? What’s that? Just dump all the story through exposition”. Welp.

Pretty disappointed of the Author. He makes hilarious stories but very lazy writing. I have yet to see him write a ingenious plot
@Keimichi I feel the same way but that’s mostly for all CN manga adaptions, they’ve always felt like cheap imitations despite good art

There will be many people who will be calling this manhua and it's novel as racist, chinese propaganda, anti japanese/korean/western etc. I will just flat out say this : they are the racists. There is no chinese propaganda or whatsoever in the novel nor there is anti any country or ethnic group. These racist people just hate the fact that mc was a chinese spy in his previous life and after being reborn his actions are heavily influenced by his previous life, for example : his ideology as a supreme assassin and spy, his ideology as a family man and a lover/husband etc. These racist people will put their own toxic spin on these and call it all kind of names to satisfy their racist hearts. Don't be fooled by them. Of course there are those usual chinese bullshit here that I loathe deeply, for example : fat best friend, aphrodisiac, countless arrogant young masters, countless thousand years old who act like 5 years old etc. So you have been warned on these few points.

Nah man. There’s definitely a dose of racism in it later on towards the Japanese ppl.
The context is a bit more complex than just plain racism for the sake of it tho, as China and Japan always had very bad relationships. WWII is still relatively recent where Japan pretty much invaded many neighbouring countries (including China) and committed a lot of war crimes (including Nanjing Massacre, mass scale rape and human experimentation, etc. Doesn’t matter if they were civilians). You can imagine that causes a lot of anti-japan sentiment in China. Which, coupled with the part-nationalism and part-propaganda of China, doesn’t go well at all.

That said, the joke is still racist because later in the story
the MC encounters a race of humanoids who have two heads, where left side of the body is male and the other is female. That race reproduces with itself. The author basically created this race for the sole sake of creating a very very distasteful pun between “Japanese” and “Ppl who fck themselves”. Its written with the exact same characters. It’s not just readers overreaching b/c MC actually directly points this out in a convo with another character, and said how disgusting this race was, how he wanted to exterminate them, and that he named them like that b/c of his past life (on earth). This race is also the final antagonist of the story.

So yeah, pretty racist I’d say. No matter how you read it.
People read most chinese novels with a degree of salt too b/c chinese nationalism is pretty common in the media (this is not unique to China however, just saying). But this case is pretty over the top, and even with a good story, people are definitely justified in calling out the racism in it too.

@Keimichi That race is not the final enemy. Also you are completely using "from his past life" out of context. I have also read the supposed "racist" conversation and every bit of comment about this race the mc has in novel. None of it is to the point people like you want to imply. You have anti chinese mentality and you also want to overturn your guilt by placing it on someone else as well as hide your own racist heart. The more you want to call someone else for racism, the more it becomes obvious that you are part of the problem. If you want to make political comment, do it somewhere else.

@Keimichi People of Hongkong are also "chinese", people of Taiwan are also "chinese", see where I am getting at? .. also in here if someone should have an actual reason to hate China, that is me. But I am not here for politics! I am here to read some work of fantasy, not to discuss politics.
Also, for your information, that race is a type of rakshasa from hundu mythology which was subsequently taken into buddhist mythology which then spread to china through buddhists.

Man, you called a chinese person racist against chinese people. See where I am getting at?

I’m simply pointing out the context to the onlooker so no one is too quick to judge and dismiss neither side of the argument, this work, the author, or those who think it’s racist.

I read the whole series in chinese. Idk if the translation removed the part or didn’t translate it. And the race can be something from Hindu mythology, I’m not saying that is bad either. Just that, in its original language, MC made a nickname for the race, and it was a dumb joke that really had no purpose. High chances that it was removed in translation b/c ofc that wouldn’t translate well to an international audience. But again, I haven’t read it in English, I don’t know if it was or not, I’m only talking about the original context.

I don’t care much about politics either. I wouldn’t have read the story and still liked it otherwise. I wouldn’t have read all of the author’s series in raws otherwise. But racism isn’t really politics, it’s just dumb. You can like a series while still being aware of its flaws. No author is perfect. No one prevents you from enjoying the series either, but there’s no reason to throw insults to people who think it’s racist either.

Give it up man. You can't convince these fucking morons. So many shitty chinese novels and comics have so much comically evil racism in them that it's just terrible.

I guess it just speaks for the shitty culture that the government of China has instigated that most of these modern webnovels are all about screwing over everybody else, being racist and getting a harem of trophy wives. It's so childish.

@assman162 Yeah man, I agree. I wish that wasn’t the case, but it’s often true. It comes out mostly through works of poor quality though (which seems to be a great majority of manhua translated)m so part of it is just poor writing. Manhuas aren’t exactly a medium full of good stuff currently, and other medium are less accessible, such as dramas and some books. Also, it doesn’t help that social commentary isn’t exactly welcome. There are quite a few good novels which doesn’t have comically bad evil racism luckily. Most just have some minor degree of patriotism that feels weird as an outsider, but not uncommon in any other sort of media from other countries (Japanese isekais portraying japan like the most peaceful country in the world, or just America in their films lol).

What happened to China and its current culture is a whole can of worms I don’t wanna touch lol.

I have read the webnovel and it's sad to read this manhua being translated and edited poorly.

@Keimichi the official English translation of the webnovel has an explicit racist chapter and even mentioned the
Rape of Nanjing
.
