I think going by how the assistant is talking, Whats-His-Name was rather unsettled by how she reacted to him. It really does seem like he really regrets the awful things he did. It doesn't excuse him, but maybe it can serve as a catalyst to really let Mayu move on.

That is, if he believes he's now so much better a person that he can also help to make Mayu feel better, or if he can admit to himself that the best thing he can do is to stay away.
