Honestly though I thought her "forgiveness" here seemed a pretty decent (if almost definitely unintentional) "I forgive you, but, to be clear, you're still a horrible person".
(Now, I think he's supposed to be a three-dimensional character who, like many who abuse in anger, was not in a good place at the time. Honestly though the realness of that has, if anything, made this more uncomfortable to read for me. Nobody is obligated to take care of someone who's been lashing out at others while they self-destruct. Well, that said, I think the author possibly recognizes all of that from what I've seen so far, thankfully.)
