One person associated with the student council goes missing and another one is found in a coma, and nobody can say where the council president was when those things happened. It's no evidence of anything, but it's a good starting point. Also, if someone of Bakarina's status is in a coma, wouldn't they have a light mage have a look? Such a mage could probably remove the dark magic spell used on her. Assuming it was such and not sheer physical brain trauma, which would be pretty strange treatment of the main character.

@Kaarme I'll admit that I can't remember off the top of my head since it's been ages since I read the first couple chapters, but isn't Maria's status as a light mage mostly because of how rare they are? If so, there may not be any other light mages in the country that can counteract the spell... And that's if they even recognize it as a product of dark magic in the first place. Didn't they say that dark magic was taboo or forbidden? Taboo and forbidden things tend to be hidden away so that the average person knows absolutely nothing about them, sometimes to the point they're not even aware it exists, let alone their exact capabilities.

@Kaarme Weren't light magic users supposed to be extremely rare? I don't think they would send one over to look at a patient unless they were absolutely certain that dark magic was behind her condition. And at the moment none of the characters know what happened to Bakarina. For all they know it could be just illness. 🤔

@Vincentius If it's that rare, it's pretty strange Maria wasn't protected at all by the state and now the state doesn't seem to care much she has gone missing. I'd say they are rare, but only in the sense of being the least numerous of mages (not counting dark mages).

A random light mage brought to see Bakarina might not recognise dark magic for what it is, but they ought to recognise something is there due to light and dark being so antagonistic to each other. Simply injecting light magic might dispel it, or some general spell. Hard to say since we don't know much about magic in this series.
